Smile in the Mind

Bridgwater based artist Gordon Coldwell exhbited 20 artworks at the Blue Cedar Printworks in Glastonbury.  The show, entitled ‘A Smile in the Mind’ ran for the whole of September.

Since January of this year Gordon has made more than 350 works, all of the same intensity as those shown here.

He said: “I have made artworks throughout my life, however, never with the sustained compulsion to make them as I have this year.
“I feel possessed by a happy art making demon – long may he stay with me.”

The body of work from which those on show are taken is an eclectic mix of ‘unique evolutions’, it is essentially ‘Art out of Art’ and ‘Art About Art’, multi-layered in construction and potential meaning.

Each work is made by importing original and sourced pictorial content into two kinds of image manipulating software, the composition is then constructed, developed and finessed on an iPad and PC.

Each work is then typically Giclee printed onto canvas and stretched on board.  The final stage is to enliven the surface by adding highlighted areas of acrylic pigment with brush work.
