Girl with a Pearl

Girl with a Pearl

'Girl with a Pearl'... the girl is the daughter of one of my Dutch cousins. The pearl floats and catches the girl's eyes. A Vermeer like interior becomes a contemporary space. The framed Milk Maid on the wall is a favourite Vermeer painting of mine... silent, apart from the milk gently hitting the bowl.

Art History Memory Boxes

Art History Memory Boxes

'Art History Memory Boxes' is another Art About Art image of mine. It is a composite work utilising a number of artworks that reference The Nude in Art and the work of the Dutch 17C artist Johannes Vermeer. All of the separate images that make up this multi layered work have gone through significant changes from their original compositions. In so doing their meaning/narrative has changed.

The Rules of Faith & Fidelity - after Caravaggio and Vermeer

In seeking to find ways of creating artworks that attempt to reference moments in time, capture memories ...and, on occasions, dream-like states, has led me to use sequencing alluding devices in my compositions.

Hypnogogia & Sleep Walking

Two more artworks by Gordon Coldwell. They are associated with conjuring up images that relate to sleep and reflect the pictorial language I have been using lately i.e. stage-like compositions in which characters and objects interact. Capturing moments in time... sometimes dream like in look... often autobiographical in content... on occasions provocative in intent, imaginary in content.

Word Games + What Do Artists Talk About?

Word Games + What Do Artists Talk About?

I visited a retrospective of the work of the American Abstract Expressionist Willem De Kooning (must be 30 years or more ago) in London. I loved De Kooning's early figurative paintings at the time and these works left a long lasting impression on me, so much so that in the last two years I have made around 30 artworks 'in the spirit of the young De Kooning.
